DALLAS---Approximately 127 million adults in the United States are overweight and 9 million people are severely obese, according to the American Obesity Association. Meanwhile, numerous other health studies have shown that foods high in sugar and fat contribute to weight problems and obesity for both women and men. To help North Texans tackle their health and weight issues, Pharmacy Compounding Specialties in Dallas is hosting, Nutritional Intervention for Permanent Weight Loss, a free seminar about the clinically proven Take Shape for Life weight-management program. The seminar will be 1-2 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at the pharmacy’s Dallas location at 8061 Walnut Hill Lane, Suite 924. Take Shape for Life is a wholly owned subsidiary of Medifast Inc. and the program utilizes the Medifast product line to help individuals manage diseases such as Type II diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension, joint disease and non-HRT menopause therapy, as well as weight gain and obesity. By stressing proper nutrition and using meal replacements and supplements, many of those who participate in the Take Shape for Life program have each lost 2-5 pounds per week safely and without hunger or muscle loss. Health professionals administer the program, which uses guidelines established by Johns Hopkins University. Those who attend the seminar are under no obligation to join the Take Shape for Life program, but PCS’ program participants have lost more a total of more than 700 pounds since May, said Diane Porter (MS, RN, A.C.N.). “Feedback
from our group includes the effectiveness, lots of variety, very convenient,
portable and even decreasing needs for medications,” Diane Porter said. As
an added bonus this month, Pat Staude, a certified health advisor and the owner
and program director of St. Louis Institute for Weight Management, will be the
guest speaker. She will discuss the details of the program and the success in
her clinic with tips on keeping the weight off long term after losing it. She
recently was promoted to National Director with Take Shape for Life, a position
earned from her mission to help as many people achieve optimal health. “Weight loss reduces our risk for diseases we all want to avoid--heart disease, stroke, diabetes, many forms of cancer, bone and joint problems, sleep apnea and many more,” Staude said. “Heart disease does not start with chest pains on the way to the ER; cancer does not start the day of a positive biopsy. Take control of your health.” PCS is the only pharmacy in the Dallas-Fort Worth area offering the Take Shape for Life weight-management program. Similar seminars were hosted at the pharmacy over the last few months year and their popularity convinced PCS Rx’s owners, Jim (DPh, RPh, A.C.N.) and Diane Porter to add another session. During
the seminar, the Porters will share the six keys from the National Weight
Control Registry that help patients lose several pounds a week and keep it off.
Attendees will receive body composition tests, meal-replacement samples
and diabetic reports, all at no charge. PCS’s
goal is to help a minimum of 1,000 people in the area regain control of their
life by managing their weight once and for all.
In addition, the Porters plan to educate other health professionals in
the community on how to integrate nutritional intervention and behavioral
